The Bather

1998, Oil on Canvas, Size: 24 x 16

She would often take midnight baths in the sea. She fancied these late-night swims, since no one was watching and the water sparkled with the myriad of magical little lanterns. The pebbles were still warm from the burning day before and the refreshing water presented a thin scent of seaweed.

Entering and exiting the water is routine for a swimmer. Although she performed this ritual many times, the stealth night often triggered nerves and apprehension. Once in the water, she is safe and empowered. She is a woman, she is the queen.
